Alexei Bogolyubov
1824–1896
Alexei Bogolyubov graduated from the Naval Cadet Corps and served at sea before concentrating on painting. Academic training and European travel combined knowledge of ships with landscape practice. He painted naval battles, ports and intimate river views. In France he absorbed lessons from Corot and Barbizon painters, developing freer outdoor studies. He helped younger Russian artists, including Repin and Polenov, find locations and methods for plein-air work. His participation in travelling exhibitions brought French discoveries into Russian artistic life.
