Lev Lagorio
1826–1905
Lev Lagorio was born in Feodosia to a Neapolitan vice-consul and received early lessons from Aivazovsky. He studied at the St Petersburg Academy and travelled in the Caucasus, France and Italy. Italian views earned him a landscape professorship in 1860. Alongside panoramas, he made detailed outdoor studies attentive to tree structure, stone surfaces and subtle illumination. Close observation of an individual natural site could sustain an independent painting.
