Sergei Vinogradov

Sergei Vinogradov moved from genre scenes towards landscapes centred on sunlight and estate life. After meeting the Mamontovs, owners of Golovinka, in the 1890s, he painted there frequently. Polenov and French Impressionism helped him describe objects through changing outdoor colour. Gardens, terraces and rooms preserve a particular culture of private leisure in the early twentieth century. Free handling and informal viewpoints make carefully arranged surroundings appear as immediate observations of a summer day.
