Ivan Shishkin
1832–1898
Ivan Shishkin made the forest a central subject of his art. Roots, bark, branches and forest ground matter alongside the overall view and its lighting. Close observations serve a larger composition, maintaining coherence despite abundant detail.
Shishkin exhibited with the Wanderers, and Pavel Tretyakov acquired his work for the gallery. Rye combines trees with cultivated land. Morning in a Pine Forest was made with Konstantin Savitsky, who painted the bears. Together these works reveal different ways of connecting landscape with human presence or animal life.
