Filipp Malyavin
1869–1940
Filipp Malyavin grew up in a peasant family, studied icon painting on Mount Athos and later entered the Academy of Arts under Repin. Relatives and villagers became his early subjects. He gave them large scale and independent presence through strong relationships of red, white and dark tones. Tretyakov bought his work while he was still a student. The 1900 Paris World’s Fair brought international recognition. Peasant subjects remained central even after emigration.
