Fyodor Bruni
1801–1875
Fyodor Bruni came from an Italian artistic family, trained in St Petersburg and worked extensively in Rome. Historical, mythological and religious painting formed the core of his practice. He created The Brazen Serpent, prepared designs for St Isaac’s Cathedral and taught at the Academy. From 1849 to 1864 he curated the Hermitage picture gallery. His career joins artistic production with state and church commissions, teaching and museum collecting.
