Fyodor Vasilyev
1850–1873
Fyodor Vasilyev lived only twenty-three years but became a significant Russian landscape painter. He closely studied changing weather, clouds and open space. A Volga journey in 1870 informed later work, while The Thaw won a Society for the Encouragement of Artists prize and attracted Tretyakov. Vasilyev connected observation with the emotional effect of a whole scene. Small figures, wet roads and shifting light made a place’s conditions imaginable as personal experience.
