Georges Lemmen
1865–1916
Georges Lemmen worked in Belgium and belonged to Les XX, whose exhibitions introduced Brussels audiences to new European art. Around 1890, under Seurat’s influence, he began constructing pictures from separate dots of colour. He applied this method to portraits of people close to him. In his portrait of his sister Julie, similar marks compose face, dress and background, while differences in their density and colour preserve the sitter’s individuality.
