Gerard ter Borch the Younger
1617–1681
Gerard ter Borch trained with his father, a painter in Zwolle, and later traveled widely. He attended the negotiations leading to the Peace of Münster in 1648 and painted its ratification. Settling in Deventer in 1654, he developed small portraits and intimate interiors, rendering satin and silk with exceptional care. Music, letters, and visits allowed him to explore social conventions while leaving viewers room to interpret the relationships between his figures.
