Henri Edmond Cross

1856–1910

Cross was a French painter who systematically divided colour into small dots and strokes. In 1891 rheumatoid arthritis led him to move to Cabasson on the Côte d’Azur. Mediterranean light and landscape became central to his art. In Beach at Cabasson, measured touches of the brush produce a sense of heat, openness and bodily ease.
