Henri Fantin-Latour

1836–1904

Fantin-Latour studied with his artist father, copied old masters at the Louvre and briefly attended Courbet’s school. He was close to Manet and other painters of the new generation while retaining his own restrained manner. His individual and group portraits recorded Parisian writers and painters. English buyers especially valued his flower still lifes. Alongside closely observed objects, he developed imaginative compositions associated with music and mythology.
