Konstantin Makovsky
1839–1915
Konstantin Makovsky grew up in a Moscow family closely connected with art and music. He trained in Moscow and at the St Petersburg Academy, joined the Revolt of the Fourteen and early Wanderers exhibitions. Portraits, genre scenes and history painting brought him audiences ranging from observers of rural life to the imperial circle. Attention to fabrics, colour and striking composition sustained his interest in material richness and imposing human presentation.
