Matthew Pratt
1734–1805

Pratt was born in Philadelphia to a goldsmith and apprenticed at fifteen to his uncle James Claypoole, a portrait, sign and house painter. He arrived in London in 1764 and exhibited The American School, depicting Benjamin West's studio, two years later.
