Orazio Gentileschi
1563–1639
Orazio Gentileschi was born in Pisa into a family of painters and goldsmiths. In Rome he became close to Caravaggio and adopted his interest in observed figures and directed light. His later work developed an especially refined treatment of color and fabrics. Gentileschi worked across Italy and subsequently at the courts of Paris and London. He trained his daughter Artemisia, who established a successful independent career. His commissions and travels place him within the international networks of seventeenth-century court art.
