Alexey Venetsianov

Venetsianov painted portraits and scenes of rural life. He became an academician in 1811 and moved to his Safonkovo estate in 1819. There he painted from life and established an art school.

The Threshing Floor shows his interest in space and illumination. The scale of the figures, the direction of the beams and the light from the doorways describe an entire interior on a small canvas.
