Viktor Vasnetsov

Vasnetsov grew up in a rural priest’s family in Vyatka province. After theological schooling he studied drawing with Kramskoy and at the Academy of Arts. Early success came through genre painting; epics and fairy tales later became central. In Moscow he joined the Abramtsevo circle and worked on theatre design, church murals and architectural projects, including the Tretyakov Gallery’s recognisable façade. In the paintings gathered here, folklore meets observed nature: heavy trees surround fantastic travellers, a stone halts a knight, and grass grows beside heroic horses. Objects and bodies retain material definition within invented events. Some scenes use movement, others prolonged stillness. These choices make folk narratives accessible through specific visual relationships even when viewers do not know every detail of the original tale.
