Alyonushka

A girl sits on a stone beside a woodland pool, clasping her knees. The idea relates to Vasnetsov’s encounter with a peasant girl near Akhtyrka in 1880. The landscape also grew from observing nature near Moscow. The image’s later association with Alyonushka and her brother Ivanushka does not exhaust these origins.

Her cheek rests on folded hands. Reddish hair falls loosely around the face, and her gaze turns towards the water. The pose can suggest weariness or sadness. Vasnetsov leaves the cause unseen, making observation of the figure our principal approach to her experience.

Bare feet rest on uneven stone close to the water. Pale skin stands out against dark cloth and grey rock. This simple detail grounds the image in physical, everyday experience. The girl occupies a small patch of solid ground, surrounded by the pool and dense woodland.

Tall stems partly overlap the stone and dress in the foreground. Their slender verticals continue the young trees’ lines, connecting the figure with the landscape’s arrangement. Plants stand very close to us, as though we too have approached the edge of the overgrown pool.

The dark water reflects her face and clothing. Yellow leaves mark its surface. The reflection repeats the figure below the stone in less distinct patches. The still pool can be understood as part of the scene’s prolonged quiet, with almost no unfolding action.

A dark wall of conifers rises behind the girl, with slender deciduous trees beside her. Sky appears only above. The close woodland background distinguishes her pale face. With little open passage into the distance, our attention returns to the small bent figure beside the water.

After its first exhibition in 1881, Vasnetsov continued revising the canvas and strengthening nature’s role. The Tretyakov Gallery acquired it from Vladimir von Meck in 1900. Familiarity with the fairy-tale name may precede the painting; close looking restores attention to posture, water and observed woodland.
