William Merritt Chase
1849–1916

After studying in Munich, Chase opened a teaching studio in New York, with Dora Wheeler as his first student. He accepted women privately when relatively few American painters did. From 1891 to 1902 he directed the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art.
