Christ Cleansing the Temple

El Greco painted this work in Italy, probably before 1570. Born in Crete and trained in icon painting, he reached Venice around 1567. The Gospel expulsion of the merchants let him combine religious narrative with newly learned resources: deep architectural perspective, moving bodies and intensely coloured clothes.

Christ occupies the middle but remains small within the surrounding architecture. Pink clothing and a blue cloak identify him quickly. The raised hand holding a scourge directs the action. People on either side react differently, so the central gesture gathers several small incidents into one narrative.

The man on the left turns his bare back towards us. Raised arm and bent torso indicate a sharp turn. Pale flesh stands out among cloth and shadows. Movement becomes understandable through the position of body parts even when the face contributes little to the story.

Cages containing white birds stand at lower left. Small straight bars contrast with curved human figures. The objects specify the trading activity within the temple scene. Merchandise, baskets and portable equipment give the Gospel event an everyday material setting.

At Christ’s feet a man bends over a basket containing coins. Pale and golden marks stand out against dark cloth. Scattered objects appear below. These small things make the trading activity visible and complement the surrounding figures’ abrupt movements. Objects help explain the cause of the temple disturbance.

High arches recede towards a smaller opening. Stone lines gather scattered figures into a common space. The museum connects this architecture with Venetian models. For an artist trained in another pictorial tradition, it greatly expanded the means available for telling a story.

The museum places the temple’s purification in the context of Catholic reform after the Council of Trent. This is historical context, not an established instruction from a particular patron. El Greco later returned to the subject. This early version shows a familiar religious story helping him explore a new artistic environment.
