Ilya Repin

Repin was born in Chuguev and studied in St Petersburg with Kramskoy and at the Academy of Arts. Travel in Italy and France broadened his knowledge of European painting. He joined the Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions in 1878, painted portraits, contemporary subjects and history paintings, and taught at the Academy. His later home was the Penaty estate in Kuokkala, which became part of independent Finland after the border changed. In the paintings gathered here, shared labour, events or conversation connect people while preserving individual gestures. Crowded scenes unfold through separate encounters; the portrait of Mussorgsky shows comparable attention within one figure. Repin’s memoirs, articles and extensive correspondence help connect completed paintings with his working processes, artistic debates and relationships with contemporaries.
