Jean Honoré Fragonard
1732–1806
Jean-Honoré Fragonard studied with François Boucher, won the Prix de Rome in 1752, and continued his training in Italy. His fluid handling was especially suited to paintings for private patrons. Courtship, reading, and family life let him combine everyday observation with imaginative invention. His rapid brushwork can suggest movement even in a still figure. Alongside elegant amusements, his paintings explore childcare and relationships between generations.
