Pieter de Hooch
1629–after 1684
Pieter de Hooch was born in Rotterdam, the son of a bricklayer. He joined Delft’s painters’ guild in 1655 and developed his celebrated courtyards and domestic interiors there. Sequences of doors, windows, and sunlit rooms connect daily activities with the architecture of the home. After moving to Amsterdam around 1660, he increasingly portrayed fashionable society in more luxurious settings. His last dated painting is from 1684; the date of his death remains uncertain.
