Vasily Surikov

Surikov was born into a Cossack family in Krasnoyarsk. Support from industrialist Pyotr Kuznetsov enabled his journey to St Petersburg and studies at the Academy of Arts. He later settled in Moscow. Siberian memories, Moscow architecture, historical reading and work with models informed his large canvases. The works gathered here examine events through varied human responses: some people act, others watch or support companions. Individual faces and hands remain traceable within dense crowds. Menshikov in Berezovo brings this interest in relationships into a confined family interior, while Taking a Snow Town addresses a living Siberian custom. Surikov also worked in watercolour and produced numerous studies. Preparatory material reveals how observed figures and places were transformed into the arrangements of historical scenes.
