Taking a Snow Town

A horseman bursts through a snow wall as people laugh and wave branches. Surikov depicts a Siberian Shrovetide game familiar from childhood. He returned to Krasnoyarsk after his wife’s death in 1888. The painting grew from his return home, with relatives helping prepare the festive scene.

The horse rises over the broken barrier beneath its rider. White fragments scatter around its legs. We catch the instant after the wall breaks while movement continues. The animal’s dark head stands clearly against the snow, making the central action easy to locate within the crowded celebration.

A man facing away raises a branch. The game’s defenders attempted to stop the rider. His turning body directs effort towards the horse. Connecting the foreground with the breakthrough, he makes the organised resistance of the contest visible.

Near the centre, a participant in white with a red belt smiles broadly. His face turns towards the action and his arms join the surrounding movement. White clothing echoes the snow, while the belt distinguishes him. Small colour differences let us identify individuals within the dense gathering.

On the right, spectators sit in a sledge covered with a vivid patterned carpet. Close to the game, they do not defend the wall themselves. The large patch of colour balances the rider on the left. Both participants and spectators occupy substantial parts of the canvas.

At the left edge, faces appear between raised arms and branches. The frame cuts some figures short, suggesting that the gathering continues beyond the canvas. The composition can be read as the view of someone standing among spectators and seeing one part of a larger celebration.

The Russian Museum received the painting from Vladimir von Meck’s collection in 1908. Among Surikov’s large history paintings, it stands out for addressing a living folk custom. His interest in a group’s varied movements remains: one brief event comprises many individual actions.
