Outing to Zhang Gong's Grotto — Shitao
Purchase, The Dillon Fund Gift, 1982 · The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Zhanggong’s grotto carried associations with Daoist renewal and creative power. Shitao transformed an earlier Shen Zhou composition through coloured layers and active forms. An appended poem addresses the cave. Travel, painting and literary response form one conception.

A dark arched entrance opens in the central mountain. The grotto becomes the principal place organising the landscape.

Red-brown trunks rise above the ridge. Coloured lines distinguish vegetation among rocks.

Pines spread along the right slope. Their directions continue the winding natural forms.

Dark rounded rocks fill the lower left. Dense nearby volumes contrast with the more open entrance.

A tree crowns a pale textured cliff. Layers of colour and ink make the surface visibly varied.

Bold calligraphy descends on the right. The poetic response preserves the artist’s personal engagement with the sacred place.

Shitao used earlier compositions as material for personal artistic investigation. Shen Zhou’s image gains a different density of colour and brush movement connected with ideas of natural renewal.
