Viktor Borisov-Musatov
1870–1905

Borisov-Musatov was born in Saratov and studied in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Fernand Cormon’s Paris studio. He painted landscapes, portraits and figure compositions. His work influenced Russian Symbolism and the artists of the future Blue Rose group.
In The Pool, colours in the clothing recur in reflections, while the skirt echoes the curve of the shore. Such correspondences connect people and landscape. Form and colour take precedence over a specific event.
