Frans Hals
1582/3–1666

Born in Antwerp, Hals worked mainly in Haarlem and joined its guild in 1610. He trained with Karel van Mander and painted citizens, families, civic guards and almshouse regents. His brushwork became an important model for Manet in the nineteenth century.
