Willem Coymans

Hals painted Willem Coymans in 1645, when he was twenty-two. The sitter belonged to a wealthy Haarlem family, several of whose members Hals portrayed. This small painting joins social indicators with an informal pose. Precisely organised clothing, gaze and gesture underpin its freedom of execution.

Coymans looks directly towards the viewer. Warm light passages shape his face, interrupted by short shadows. Moustache and hair receive different degrees of detail. Individual brush movements remain visible nearby; from farther away they form a recognisable human appearance.

A family coat of arms with three cows’ heads appears on the wall at right, a play on the name Coymans. Age and date are written below. This small area acts as documentary identification within the image, joining free painting with precise family and chronological information.
