Maximov was born in the village of Lopino in Saint Petersburg Governorate. He studied at the Academy of Arts from 1863 to 1866, joined the Peredvizhniki in 1872 and became an academician of painting in 1878.

In All in the Past, two women and their surroundings describe the life of an old estate. Maximov brings the empty house together with its inhabitants’ familiar routines. Domestic details explain the story.
