Grandmother’s Tales

Maximov painted Grandmother’s Tales in 1867, drawing on peasant life he knew and memories of his mother’s storytelling. The family gathers around an older woman while household tasks continue. He studied the interior from life and used village children as models. Personal memory and observation become a substantial scene of shared attention.

The storyteller sits near the centre holding a spindle. Handwork and oral narration can proceed together. Stories, expressions and family memory were passed on in such settings. Culture appears without a separate stage, printed book or specially reserved hour, within the daily life of several generations.

Children approach the older woman from different sides, some standing and others sitting lower. Their varied positions make listening visible as an activity. Shared attention unites different ages and postures. The tale becomes an event accessible to people with different experience and responsibilities.

The woman on the right holds an infant, participating while continuing childcare. Tretyakov later suggested that Maximov correct the proportions of her arms. The artist left them unchanged. This passage becomes a site of professional disagreement between painter and collector, who examined his acquisitions closely.

A burning splinter supplies a small, uneven light source. Faces emerge while the cabin’s corners remain dark. Modest domestic lighting organises the larger composition, gathering the listeners together. New figures become visible gradually as our eye adjusts to the interior.

Dishes appear on shelves to the right, with household objects nearby. Storage, work, rest and childcare coexist within one room. The objects convey both crowded conditions and familiarity. Storytelling takes place in a materially specific environment that contemporary viewers could recognise through small details.

The painting won a Society for the Encouragement of Artists prize and became an early success for Maximov. Coming from a peasant background, he presented its cultural life to a broad art audience. The warm family scene remains an authorial selection, preserving an actual form of communication while shaping an appealing image of village life.
