Piet Mondrian
1872–1944

Mondrian cofounded De Stijl with Theo van Doesburg in 1917. His mature vocabulary used verticals, horizontals, primary colors, white, gray and black. After moving to New York in 1940, he replaced black lines with colored ones and tested arrangements using movable paper strips.
