Kandinsky was born in Moscow and studied law and economics before moving to Munich to study art. With Franz Marc he helped establish Der Blaue Reiter. He taught at the Bauhaus from 1922 and settled near Paris after the school closed.

Improvisation No. 30 still contains recognisable cannons and other hints of objects. At the same time, patches of colour and lines form an independent composition. The 1913 work shows a stage in his movement towards abstraction.
