Wind among the Trees on the Riverbank

Ni Zan painted this for the scholar-artist Yu Kan in 1363, during displacement and in the year his wife died. Sparse forms and an inscription may register isolation. Biography informs the view without assigning a single meaning to every empty area.

Thin trees rise from the rocky near bank. The small group occupies only part of the open surface.

From 1356 to 1366 Ni Zan lived displaced with his family southwest of Suzhou. A gift to another scholar places the painting within personal relationships maintained despite the loss of a stable home.
