Grandmother’s Garden

Polenov painted this Moscow garden in 1878. Two women have stepped onto a path beside the Baumgarten estate house. They occupy only a small part of the canvas; their walk unfolds within a much larger landscape.

The older woman relies on a walking stick and her companion’s arm. Her entire figure is visible against the light path. Her stance and the placement of her feet suggest a slow step.

The companion’s pink dress follows the fashion of the 1870s; the older woman wears an old-fashioned bonnet. Their clothes establish two generations without requiring a detailed family history.

White columns and a triangular pediment identify the house’s classical architecture. Its façade is symmetrical. The surrounding trees have grown taller than the building, partly obscuring its regular structure.

Sunlight falls in patches across the path and foliage. Shaded greens are darker and cooler. Polenov follows these changes of light while keeping both individual leaves and larger groups of trees legible.

Steps descend from the columns towards the path. Their edges are uneven, and the boundary between the stonework and the garden is indistinct. Polenov conveys the house’s condition through details visible without knowing its residents’ history.

The pale path widens at the bottom edge. The two women stand at its far end, making their distance immediately apparent. Its curve joins the foreground to the porch and gives their walk a clear direction.

This approach to landscape attends to light and to places shaped by daily life. The small figures leave most of the canvas to the trees and old house. The title gives this recognisable Moscow scene a personal association.
