Self-Portrait, 1889–1894.

Eakins studied art and anatomy in Philadelphia before training in France and Spain. His insistence on life study at the Pennsylvania Academy caused controversy; using a nude male model before a mixed class led to his resignation. Photography supported studies of movement and anatomy.
