Girl in a Red Fur Coat

This girl posed for Sergei Ivanov while he was preparing a large painting of a peasant family before Peter the Great’s time. From 1903 he lived in Svistukha and made dozens of studies of local residents. He even built a heated studio on runners for winter work. Historical painting began with observing contemporaries, their clothing and their bearing in cold weather.

Her head turns aside and her eyes are lowered. Broad strokes establish the face because Ivanov is studying the whole person. A pale headscarf separates the head from dark logs. He finds a pose that can later enter a larger group while retaining the model’s everyday naturalness.

The orange-red coat fastens in an old-fashioned manner with its fur inward. It covers almost the whole body and determines the silhouette. Ivanov used surviving peasant dress as material for reconstructing the past. A similar coat appears in his Family of 1907. The study shows a specific object moving from observation into a historical composition.

Long sleeves cover the hands, with dark fur marking their edges. A sheepskin coat provided practical protection from cold and also featured in wedding customs, where fur was associated with wishes for prosperity. That history enriches the garment without turning the posing girl into a participant in a wedding ceremony.

A differently shaded red hem appears beneath the coat, while the feet nearly merge with the shadow on snow. The silhouette is weighty and stable. Ivanov retains the effect of layered winter clothing on the body’s posture. Such observation helps historical painting account for a costume’s actual weight and bulk.

Snow beside the red clothing appears particularly bright. Loose handling includes grey and faintly pink transitions. The contrast makes the silhouette readable from a distance. The study both records the sitter and tests a colour shape that can function among other figures in a larger painting.

Ivanov returned to his peasant-family project over several years, producing different versions. A convincing historical image could grow from many contemporary observations. Similarities in clothing help the artist without eliminating the distance between periods. This is an early twentieth-century girl whose appearance became material for a story about the seventeenth century.
