The Small Cowper Madonna
Raphael · c. 1505
Explore the painting
Raphael painted this Madonna around 1505. The young artist was developing experience gained in Umbria while encountering Florentine painting. A small panel joins a close mother-and-child group with an open landscape. The original commission is unknown; its later name refers to an English collector rather than the depicted location.
Mary inclines her head slightly towards the child. A thin shadow lies beneath her chin, while soft light joins cheek and neck. Her face sits near the upper edge, returning attention to the close group. Its inclination responds to the infant’s movement opposite.
The child turns his head towards the viewer while pressing against his mother. One arm reaches across her chest. Different directions keep the figure active within a calm overall arrangement. Small overlaps of arms, shoulders and fabric establish bodily contact.
Mary’s hand on our right supports the child beneath his torso. Fine shadows distinguish her pale fingers from his skin. The gesture makes his position physically convincing. A religious image includes the familiar everyday action of an adult carrying a small body’s weight.
A blue mantle fills the lower panel around Mary’s red clothing. Broad folds give the group a wide base. Surfaces lack a sharp sheen, keeping fabric subordinate to skin and gesture. Colour both identifies the figure and steadies the composition.
A small church stands on a rise beyond the shoulder at right. Dark trees separate it from pale sky. Architecture shrinks dramatically beside the figures, opening depth. It enlarges the setting while preserving the principal closeness between mother, child and viewer.
The painting belonged to the third Earl Cowper, who settled in Italy after travelling there in the 1760s. His collection later moved to England. “Small” distinguishes this work from another Raphael Madonna he owned. Collecting history thus attached a name to an image painted centuries before its owner’s birth.
