The Abduction of Europa

Zeus took the form of a bull and carried the Phoenician princess Europa across the sea to Crete. Serov explored the myth after travelling through Greece with Bakst in 1907, seeing ancient architecture, sculpture and Cretan monuments. This 1910 work joins a portraitist’s experience with a search for flat colour fields, expressive contours and non-naturalistic space.

Europa sits on the bull’s back, looking almost directly towards us. Her simplified face and hair remain distinctive. Serov was interested in archaic korai, Greek statues of young women that had originally been coloured. They offered a way to construct the figure through a clear silhouette and broad formal relationships.

The orange bull stands sharply against the sea’s cool blue, becoming the centre before we identify the myth. Serov intensifies colour for the whole picture’s effect. An ancient subject permits departure from ordinary portrait observation and tests the conviction of deliberately non-naturalistic colour.

Long horns curve upwards, extending the head’s direction. Their emphatic shape makes the silhouette readable from afar. Curves meet an angular muzzle and waves in several kinds of movement. Serov seeks relationships that hold the picture together even when viewed decoratively without knowing its story.

A dolphin on the left moves through the water beside the bull. Its pale shape repeats the broad diagonal and makes the sea an inhabited mythic space. Cretan frescoes offered Serov examples of rhythmic animal representation. Those impressions become a modern solution in which antiquity helps renew his own painting.

White foam runs along the bull’s body in an uneven band. The sea rises almost to the upper edge, leaving little stable horizon. We are placed close to movement through water, strengthening the sense of passage towards an unfamiliar destination within the abduction story.

Decorative beauty does not remove the myth’s content: a powerful god takes a young woman far from home. The title preserves that aspect despite restrained expressions. Serov offers no detailed account of Europa’s feelings. Movement and displacement become an image in which attractive colour coexists with the unequal power underlying the story.
