Mika Morozov

Serov painted four-year-old Mikhail Morozov in 1901. The boy’s father was an industrialist and collector; his mother Margarita hosted a literary and musical salon. The portrait emerged among Moscow families supporting the arts. In 1917 his mother transferred it to the Tretyakov Gallery with works from the family collection.

The head turns to the viewer’s right. Large dark eyes and parted lips contrast with the pale face. A gaze directed outside the painting suggests a response to something nearby, although the object of attention is not depicted.

Curls form a broad irregular outline around the head. Some strands dissolve into the grey-brown background; warmer strokes distinguish others. Loosely arranged hair reinforces apparent liveliness without depicting movement unfolding through time.

A white shirt occupies the centre. Broad handling gives the sleeve varied stroke thickness and direction. Shadows on pale fabric avoid becoming solid black areas. The figure consequently remains distinct against darker chair and wall.

The nearer hand rests on an armrest with fingers hanging over its edge. Pale skin touches dark wood. The other hand sits higher on the opposite armrest. Unequal hand positions make the pose asymmetrical and apparently temporary.

Patterned fabric on the chair contains red, green and ochre passages. Its design is less detailed than the child’s face. Coloured forms indicate soft upholstery and a domestic setting without competing with the shirt’s large pale areas.

His mother recalled Serov talking with Mika and listening to his stories while working. This documents the painter’s relationship with his sitter. Apparent immediacy comes from silhouette, varied finish and hand positions. It does not imply that the whole canvas was made during one chance encounter.
