Girl in the Sunlight

In summer 1888 at Domotkanovo, Serov painted his cousin Maria Simonovich. The estate belonged to his friend Vladimir von Derviz. The sitter recalled months of work: he painted her face under consistent morning light, then worked on clothing, hands and landscape later in the day.

Her face turns towards us at a slight angle. Pink, ochre and cooler passages vary the skin, avoiding a simple division into bright and dark halves. The painter observes filtered light beneath trees and its changes across a rounded surface.

Numerous folds gather the pale blouse. Bright patches cross the sleeve beside lilac and greenish shadows. A mixture of colours preserves the fabric’s apparent whiteness. Highlights reveal sunlight passing through foliage in separate patches.

Joined hands rest on her lap near the right edge. Long forearms create diagonal lines. The gesture holds the figure in a settled position. It describes a visible pose without revealing Maria’s particular thoughts or feelings.

A lime-tree trunk fills the left side behind head and shoulder. Short uneven strokes describe its bark. A dark surface separates the pale figure from the landscape. Rough wood, skin and cloth remain distinct within a shared free handling.

A bright strip of grass crosses behind the figure, with dark trees farther away. Lighting principally distinguishes the planes. Open ground reveals the avenue’s depth and lets us compare direct distant sunshine with the sitter’s dappled light in shade.

Pavel Tretyakov bought the painting from Serov in the year it was made. Maria Simonovich later studied art in France and practised sculpture. Her subsequent life adds substance to the sitter’s name without changing the painter’s subject: a particular person, prolonged sittings and carefully chosen lighting conditions.
