An officer arrives at a merchant’s home to propose marriage. Fedotov depicts a match capable of joining merchant wealth with noble status. A former army officer, he knew military society. The comic scene forms a chain of actions involving the bride, parents, matchmaker and servants.

The major stands in the doorway twirling his moustache. Uniform and bright epaulettes stand out against the adjoining room. He has caused commotion before entering. His composed posture can suggest the performance of a suitor’s role, supported by confidence in the significance of his rank.

The bride in white moves left with raised hands while her mother holds her dress. Head, torso and stretched fabric connect the women in a brief action. We see an attempted departure and its interruption; embarrassment or the expected ceremony of the encounter may explain it.

The father hurriedly buttons his coat between his wife and the matchmaker, partly in shadow. This small gesture reveals preparations still underway at the guest’s arrival. Fedotov gives such domestic adjustments nearly as much attention as the elaborately dressed bride.

The matchmaker in red extends a hand towards the major while looking at his hosts. Her body connects the doorway and family group, making her intermediary role clear. Bright colour traces the introduction from the visitor to those expected to receive him.

At the left, a servant places refreshments on the table while other household members exchange words. Glasses, dishes and patterned cloth occupy their own area. They reveal the encounter’s material requirements: the guest must be received and fed. Preparations extend beyond the prospective couple.

The painting attracted considerable attention at the 1849 Academy exhibition and earned Fedotov the title of academician. He also wrote verse around its subject. This small canvas addresses relations between social estates through a familiar domestic situation in which clothing, gestures and hospitality become part of social calculation.
