The Female Student

A young woman carrying books walks along a wet city street. The title associates her with women’s educational courses, a significant feature of late nineteenth-century public life. Yaroshenko exhibited this version in 1883. It is now in Kaluga, with a closely related version in Kyiv.

Her face turns almost directly towards us. Dark hat and hair frame a pale forehead, eyes and cheeks. Indistinct street space behind her makes this encounter prominent. Confidence or concentration can be read in her expression, but remain interpretations of a constructed image.

Books are tucked beneath one arm, their pale page edges distinct against dark clothing. They establish study without a classroom. Education enters an everyday action: carrying books through the city. We see someone travelling, while the title supplies the object’s social significance.

A dark fringed shawl wraps her shoulders and almost merges with the dress. One hand holds it near the waist. These details suggest adapting to cool, damp weather, making clothing part of movement as well as appearance.

One boot projects from beneath the skirt, with the separation of the feet indicating a step. The hem nearly touches the pavement. Small shifts make the still image feel like an encounter with someone passing, whose journey will continue beyond the frame.

Puddles on the right reflect the building wall. Pale horizontal strokes mark wet stones, while the distant street dissolves into grey haze. With no competing event, repeated surfaces keep attention on the single moving figure and the conditions of her ordinary journey.

Gleb Uspensky wrote an essay treating The Female Student as an image of a new generation. The museum likewise emphasises her representative character. Books, shawl and a step make social change visible through one person encountered on a street.
