Édouard Manet
1832–1883

After failing the naval academy entrance examination, Manet turned to painting and entered Thomas Couture's studio in 1850. He responded to Baudelaire's call to address modern life. The rejected Luncheon on the Grass became a central controversy when exhibited at the Salon des Refusés in 1863.
