Vasily Polenov. In 1877–78 Polenov rented rooms in a wing near the Church of the Saviour on the Sands. This familiarity with the place led to Moscow Courtyard.
Nikolai Kasatkin. Kasatkin painted Orphaned in 1891. Two boys remain beside a fresh grave. The title establishes the loss of parents, and the museum identifies the children as brothers.
Abram Arkhipov. Arkhipov’s village shore contains buildings, a boat and groups of people. Dated around 1910, the painting is held in Warsaw.
Nikolai Dubovskoy. A large cloud hangs over dark water and a low shore. Dubovskoy painted several versions of Calm Before the Storm.
